Itinerary
1Reach Srinagar Airport and drive to Sonamarg. Walk around in the meadows, hire ponies and visit Thajiwas Glacier.
2Drive from Kashmir towards Ladakh via Zoji La and see a beautiful transformation from the evergreen mountainside to a cold desert landscape. Stop to visit the Kargil War Memorial and finally reach Kargil.
3 Head deeper into Ladakh. You will pass via the dramatic moonscapes of Lamayuru and also get to see the beautifully poised, ancient gompa here. Closer to Leh you will see Nimmu – the confluence point of the Indus & Zanskar, Patthar Sahib Gurudwara, Magnetic Hill, and the Hall of Fame – army museum.
4Visit Shey Monastery and Palace, followed by the famous Thiksey Gompa. Drive back towards Leh and take a detour at Choglamsar, across the Indus, to reach Stok Village. Enjoy a traditional meal in a three-centuries-old Ladakhi village home. Later head to Leh town: explore the Palace and Tsemo and spend some time in the vibrant Bazaar.
5 Enjoy a stunning drive over the mighty Khardung La (5602 metres) into the verdant Nubra Valley. We reach the base of the valley at Khalsar and move on to the LHS branch, via Deskit & Hunder, past the Thoise Airfield. The wide open Nubra Valley starts closing in dramatically with the rocky mountain face getting darker, finally bursting out into the verdant & vibrant Turtuk area at the northwestern end of the valley which borders the Balti province of Pakistan Check into safari tents at a verdant campsite amid fields and orchards, sprinkled with clumps of wild & vibrantly coloured blooms.
6Explore Turtuk as you spend 2-3 hours walking in and around the villages, interacting with the warm & hospitable locals. Later go for a hike and explore the pristine natural beauty all around.
7Drive back to reach Hunder / Deskit. Late afternoon experience the sand dunes of Hunder, and enjoy an optional ride on the Double Humped Camels or a ride on an ATV. Early evening drive to Deskit and reach the vantage point with a huge outdoor statue of the Maitreya Buddha near Deskit Gompa to enjoy great sunset views.
8Enjoy an off-beat drive via the less-explored Agam-Shyok region to reach the grand Pangong Tso. Drive along the lake shore, past the touristy Spangmik area for about 20 minutes to reach the undisturbed and serene area around Man village and check into a yurt in a campsite. Enjoy spectacular views of the mountains of the Changchenmo range to the north, their reflection shimmering in the ever changing blues and greens of the lakes brackish water and a glorious sunset view.
9Enjoy a spectacular sunrise by the lake shore. Drive back to Leh, and take a detour to see the grand Hemis Monastery on the way. In the evening, head for Leh bazaar.
10Depart to your respective destination.
